| This year
the British carp angling championships used our Big Hayes lake as a
qualifying venue. 11 pairs took part and the top 3 qualified for the
semi finals. Every single pair caught carp and even though the winners
were well out in front come the end the battle for 2nd and 3rd became
very tasty. Over the 48 hours there was a total of 141 carp
caught for 1868lb including a good number of 20lb plus fish and 2
30lb'ers. |
| 1st on the day was Lee Merritt
and Rob Marsh (team mainline). Rob and Lee took 45 Carp for a total of
548lb topped by mirrors of 30lb 2oz, 23lb, a ghostie of 23lb 8oz and a
common of 21lb. Lee and Rob consistently caught throughout the whole match and never looked in any danger of being over taken by any of the other competitors. Even when the match was well won they never gave up and produced one of the highest weights in the BCAC history. |

2nd spot went to local anglers
Jack Stamp and Colin Bright who took 14 carp for 219lb. Colin and Jacks
catch included mirrors of 23lb, 23lb 8oz and a ghost mirror of 22lb
15oz. Jack and Colin got off to a slow start seeing other anglers around them settling into a comfortable lead. They both managed to hook fish just before dark on the 1st night, but the hooks pulled on both occasions. Not letting this demoralize them to much they stayed up all night and by the morning had sneaked into 3rd place. That morning they went on a run and landed a further 6 fish including 2 over the 20lb barrier which saw them sail into 2nd place. Looking good and edging away from the opposition the run dried up and other anglers started catching consistently narrowing the gap, in 1 case it was down to just ounces. Luckily enough no one managed quite enough fish to knock them out of the top 3, and 4 more carp including a last gasp 11lb er saw them nick 2nd place. |
| 3rd place went to Richard
Matthews and John Stanley with 15 fish for 215lb. John and Richard also
managed a couple of 20's in their catch topped by a 24lb mirror. These guys really did get off to a slow start, in fact they were the last people to catch on the the lake. When they did start to catch they did it in style bagging thoughout the 2nd afternoon getting within 1 or 2 fish of 3rd spot. Struggling through the night they picked up where they left off the following morning and at 1 point they were in 2nd place. Come the end they were just pipped by Jack and Col which left them lying in 3rd place. (Good enough!) |
